WCT Berry Overnight Oats Recipe

Benefits of Berries:

Have you ever heard the saying, 'anything that is sweet can't be good for you?' Well, berries are the exception.

Berries are rich in a compound called anthocyanin: a member of the flavonoid family of polyphenol phytochemicals. These compounds have been linked to decreases in cardiovascular disease, cancer, weight loss, diabetes, and also increased cognitive function.

Several studies, most notably, the Nurse's Health Study II found a decrease in cardiovascular disease as well as the risk of developing hypertension, and myocardial infarction in those individuals who had a higher intake of anthocyanin, mostly from blueberries and strawberries, than those who had a lower intake.

Anthocyanins are also beneficial to our cognitive system. These compounds are believed to inhibit neuroinflammation, activate synaptic signaling, and improve blood flow to the brain. Interestingly, some anthocyanins have been found to cross the blood-brain barrier which can cause direct beneficial effects.

Lastly, they are just plain delicious. Why not add some berries to your diet?
